Weetangera Primary School Newsletter | Week 1, Term 3 2023
From Julie
Dear Families
Welcome to Term 3 and the crisp and chilly weather that accompanies winter in Canberra.
We have started the term with the usual levels of excitement associated with reconnecting with friends and teachers and the confidence associated with Term 3 learning.
It was exciting last night to watch the Matildas step into their game with a 1 - 0 win over Ireland. Of course, Weetangera Primary School came a little closer to the action with Erwin McRae’s daughter having the amazing opportunity to be one of the ‘ball girls’.
Over the holidays we also farewelled two teaching staff: Tyler Beltrame and Robyn Trenton. Tyler has taken up an opportunity to travel to the UK and beyond and Robyn is building her skills in the area of full-time adventure racing and all that is entailed in the training and preparation for this very rigorous sport.
As the processes of recruitment continue, with new staff beginning during the term 2 other staff members have joined the leadership team in the interim period. Gabe Kearins is the school leader for the Year 3/4 team and Marianne Foley for the P-2 team. If you have a concern or query or there is an issue or challenge, then Gabe and Marianne will also be the points of contact for students in those learning years as well as their usual teacher.
The Year 6 ‘Bake Sale’ was amazing yesterday with many beautifully presented and may I say very delicious goodies for sale. The exact amount raised will be advised by the money counters. What was interesting was the excitement the students had in using ‘real’ money. Holding cold, hard cash and figuring out what the worth of the paper and gold and silver coins amounted to was a challenging notion for many. It is a reminder that the development of an understanding of money needs to be invigorated as over the past few years the use of ‘tap and go’ as opposed to notes and coins has increased. This then becomes an area of focus in mathematics.
Reports were sent home and parent conversations were conducted at the conclusion of Term 2. if you have any comments or feedback about the reporting process please let either myself or Mel Bezear know, feedback is the lens through which we improve our work with your children.
I had a few thoughts for the beginning week of the term and shared them with staff, two of my favourites are below:
Being a ‘mistake maker’ is being a learner and developing in our students the capacity to know that the best mistakes are the ones we learn from is a big piece of the excellence that we are all striving for.
Have an excellent week.
And as always please make contact for any reason that you need.
Regards
Julie
